Common Sense Defence Tips

  • Always Lock all windows, doors and sunroof every time you leave the vehicle
  • Never Leave Your Keys in the ignition even if is just for a few seconds (even when you are at the petrol station) or to heat the car up in winter
  • Always Take Your Keys with you when you leave your vehicle
  • Always Remove All Valuables from sight even an empty carrier bag and never keep them in the car overnight. If you leave things on display this will attract thieves who will see it as an open invitation.
  • Avoid Identity Theft. Never Leave Important Documents in your car such as your passport, driving licence, bank statements, bank cards, car registration or any other information with your personal information. Criminals will use this information to steal your identity and to gain access to your bank accounts.
  • Never hide a spare set of keys in your vehicle. Don’t help offenders to steal your vehicle after they have broken into it.
  • Parking your car in a safe place is important. Use car parks with CCTV and onsite security. Always try to park in well lit areas with plenty of pedestrians so any suspicious activity will be noticed.
  • Try to use your garage or your driveway for parking at home
  • Avoid theft by towing or lifting by turning your wheels towards the kerb when parking. This will make towing your car more difficult for thieves who steal your car using a tow or lorry. Park in your garage or driveway at home and park in a busy area when out and about.
